-- It's a good idea to keep some on hand, because giardia symptoms can show up suddenly with explosive diarrhea and you'll be glad you ordered some ahead of time.
-- The giardia protozoa has a "life cycle" and it's a good idea to do research online to understand the timing. Usually it's going to require two or more "rounds" of 5+ days each, then wait a week before the next round to take care of the "life cycle."
-- The Panacur C package has clear directions, with a chart showing how much to give your dog. I find it hard to try and guess how much of the packet equals the exact dose per weight of dog, so I just give the whole packet (4 gram packet for my 29 pound dog).
-- You need to consider several other things: (a) the dog's innards have been compromised, so it's important to feed low-fat food, preferably canned or very wet food (e.g., Hill's Science sensitive stomach turkey and rice). Low-fat is key. (b) your pup's guts need to heal ,and will benefit greatly from probiotics (e.g., Purina's Fortiflora, which has a strain of probiotic that also fights giardia; (per laboratory research) good idea to use Fortiflora regularly. (c) it's a good idea to add pumpkin to firm up the scat (Firm Up! with pumpkin and apple flakes is really convenient since you don't have to deal with a can of pumpkin). All of these are available on Amazon. Keep some of each on hand in case giardia strikes unexpectedly.
-- Put some tasty, wet, low-fat, dog food in his bowl, and sprinkle it with Panacur, Fortiflora, and Firm Up. I usually mix it into the food a bit. It helps if the food is very wet, like stew.
-- I've had experience with two dogs, one a senior, and one a puppy. The senior dog had a weak immune system and needed several long "rounds" of Panacur. The puppy was cured after two 5-day rounds one week apart.
-- Shampoo your pup and rinse thoroughly. It's a good idea to shampoo several times throughout treatment.
-- I'm really glad Panacur is available on Amazon, as well as the three other products. If you use all of them together, your pup will get rid of giardia. But it will take two or more rounds, most likely. One round is usually not enough.
-- The price is affordable. If I had to go to the vet each time, it would be expensive.
I have one dog who's 40 lbs, the other is 70 lbs, so I ordered 3 packages. Each day, for 3 days, the little guy got one packet, the big one got 2 packets. I mixed it up with some plain greek yogurt and gave it as a cool refreshing treat since it was oppressively hot and their regular food is administered via food balls and other toys. One of the dogs is very picky and hates anything that might be medicine, it's rather humorous, and then the other one is a garbage disposal (yes, she's overweight one).
Noticed by the end of the treatment things seemed to have cleared up. Now a month later and still healthy looking turds. Amazon had it cheaper than anywhere else local, and got it quickly.
Pups got spoiled with the greek yogurt they figured was a regular meal time treaty, so if consuming the medicine is at all a problem, I suggest mixing it up with some yogurt. Since the powder label says it needs to be stored at a certain temperature range, basically room temperature, I didn't pre-mix the yogurt and powder, just did it right before I was going to give it to them.
Yeah, comparing this to the syrupy syringe stuff the vet gave in the past when one of the pups tested positive for worms, this way is so much cheaper and works much easier. The one little picky dude it was torture to get him to eat that stuff, since he saw it came from a syringe and then knew the smell. Well guess what, big girl there ate the syringe and her brother's. (This is the plastic syringe thing without any needle). Aren't doggies silly sometimes?
So yeah, I live deep in the woods, sometimes venture out to the dog parks in the city and sometimes to the dog beach, and it's probably in those social areas they can pick up things, but glad I found a cost effective and safe solution. It's kinda funny, the whole reason I knew I could DIY deworm was because I was wandering in Tractor Supply and saw that in the horse section or something. By the way, if you have Tractor Supply, it can be interesting to wander in different isles you might be unfamiliar with. I love that store. And of course so do my doggies, and when I had goats, them too.
